What is BA training and who needs it? — SEFtec | HUET Training Simulators | Survival Training Equipment

What is BA training and who needs it?

Fire-fighters bravely face unknown hazards daily; risking their lives to keep us safe. By definition, every emergency situation is serious, unexpected and dangerous. Fire-fighters must undergo rigorous and frequent training to ensure they are adequately prepared for every scenario.

SEFtec Group produces a wide range of fire-fighter training props:

  •       Custom fire props for aviation, marine, automotive, and any other training

  •       Real or artificial flames and smoke

  •      Choice of fuels (Class A, Class B, Class C) including clean-burning propane

  •       Stand-alone props or complete training structures

  •       Integrated safety systems including data logging, alarms, and automatic safety shutdowns

  •       Over 100 installations worldwide

The latest installation by SEFtec Group is a custom-designed BA training structure for the Irish Air Corps.

 What is BA training?

BA training, or Breathing Apparatus training, teaches fire-fighters how to safely conduct rescue operations in areas where smoke or fumes make the air irrespirable (unbreathable). The training encompasses a wide range of instruction, including:

  •       Correct wearing of the appropriate clothing and PPE (Personal Protective Equipment)

  •       Competent use of BA (Breathing Apparatus)

  •       Safety of the individual fire-fighter

  •       Safety of all fire-fighters at the scene

  •       Analysis of the risk landscape

  •       Command and control of emergency scenarios

  •       Search and rescue scenarios in smoke logged environments

  •       Crawling through confined spaces wearing full PPE

The training highlights the specific challenges faced when entering a smoke-logged building and teaches the appropriate risk-mitigation techniques. These challenges are psychological as well as physical and include:

  •       Low visibility (low light and thick smoke)

  •       Irrespirable air (toxic smoke and fumes)

  •       Unknown building layout

  •       Sensory overload

  •       Disorientation and confusion

  •       Structural instability (the building could be damaged)

  •       Heat (both from flames and also from heated air and water)

  •       Explosion risks

Who needs BA training?

As fire prevention strategies have steadily improved, the number of fires have thankfully reduced. This however poses an extra challenge for fire-fighters, who must maintain their readiness through increased training. This applies to every fire-fighter of every experience level. Constant refreshing of skills is required to ensure the safety of all fire team members when they approach unpredictable scenarios.

In order to provide effective training, the fireground must be as realistic as possible, while reducing the risks for the trainees. High fidelity training props and structures, such as those produced by SEFtec Group, enable fire-fighters to practice every skill and technique they require in a safe and controlled environment.
